02Local Knowledge

Hyderabadi words that help

Hyderabad's own Dakhani dialect, a blend of Urdu, Telugu, Marathi and Persian, will be part of your daily life. Learn even five words and colleagues, drivers and neighbours will see that you care about the city. The dialect became famous across India through the cult 2005 film The Angrez, and every community in the city loves it.

నమస్కారం
Greeting
Namaskaram
“Hello / good day”, the warm Telugu greeting that works everywhere, with domestic help, drivers and building staff who often speak Telugu primarily.
ఎలా ఉన్నారు?
Greeting
Ela unnaru?
“How are you?”, the everyday Telugu enquiry. A few words like this go a very long way at home and with neighbours.
ధన్యవాదాలు
Thanks
Dhanyavadalu
“Thank you” in Telugu, a courtesy that earns instant goodwill from staff, vendors and drivers across the city.
అవును / కాదు
Reply
Avunu / Kaadu
“Yes / No” in Telugu, the simplest pair to know for everyday exchanges with household and building staff.
అన్నీ ఎంత?
Market
Anni enta?
“How much for all?”, essential at markets and Rythu Bazaar stalls. Pair with a smile; gentle bargaining is expected.
కొంచెం తగ్గించండి
Market
Konchem tagginchandi
“Please reduce the price a little”, your polite bargaining line for bazaars, autos and street vendors.
హౌ

Daily Use
Nakko

In your home: domestic help, drivers, and building staff often speak Telugu primarily. A few phrases go a very long way.
The Biryani Debate, Your First Social Rite of Passage
Every new resident gets dragged into it. Have an opinion, even a wrong one, and you'll bond instantly.

Paradise (Secunderabad, est. 1953), The institution. Milder, great first experience. Metro: Paradise station, Blue Line.
Bawarchi (RTC X Roads), Purists' choice. Spicier, more ghee. Only the original at RTC X Roads next to Sandhya Theatre is real, 100+ fakes exist.
Shah Ghouse (Tolichowki), Late-night culture. Louder, oilier, larger portions.
Shadab (Old City, near Charminar), Most authentic. Chaotic, noisy, share tables.
Local Rhythms, What Nobody Warns You About
Hyderabadi TimeSocial events start 30 to 45 min late. Corporate Hyderabad is punctual; social Hyderabad runs its own clock. A dinner "at 8pm" means 8:45pm is fine.
Lunch at 3pmTraditional households eat the main meal at 2:30-3:30pm. Sunday lunch invites saying "come at 3" are not typos. Don't eat before arriving.
Irani Café CultureReal bonding over chai, not coffee. "Chai lenge?" means 90 minutes minimum. Irani cafés close by 9-10pm, Nimrah Café near Charminar is the pilgrimage.
Rythu Bazaar SecretGovernment farmer-direct markets. 50-80% cheaper. Go before 11am, bring your own bags. Western corridor: Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazaar (largest) or Kukatpally.
Water RuleNever drink tap water directly. Always ask landlords: "HMWSSB or borewell supply? Building RO system?" Add individual under-sink filter as backup.
Old City at NightCompletely different world. Ramadan transforms it, food stalls, lights, crowds until 3am. Visit once: it's essential. Take Uber, never drive yourself in the narrow lanes.
